Positive Response to Negative Response
Well... I've been querying. I'm guilty of getting my hopes sky-high when I receive even a glimmer of hope. However, my hopes plummeted back to earth when I received a rejection from my 1st choice literary agency.
W H YYYYY????
I'm sure I'll never know what killed the prospect. But though I am cast down, I am not defeated. If anything, it only makes me hungrier to continue to try. After all... I won a TOP HONOR Award from a completely objective agency that is highly respected in the literary world. If they think my work is good, then somebody else out there will too! (This is an example of positive self-talk.)
"Where there's a will, there's a way."
"You miss 100% of the shots you don't take."
"Tomorrow's another day." Thank God for Scarlett O'Hara.
Thank God for Philippians 4:13 - "I can do ALL things through Christ which strengtheneth me." I can even get back on that proverbial horse and continue to ride. So in the face of rejections, I am getting up, dusting myself off, and I am continuing to research suitable agents and sending them queries as well. Just this week I've sent out seven or eight more. By the way, each query I send out is preceded by an hour or two of research on the agent and her agency, so, yeah, this has become my full-time job. In the back of my head I hear voices reminding me that some very famous authors received numerous rejections before finally landing an agent or publisher. To name a few...
Agatha Christie reportedly was turned down repeatedly for five years. Even people who've never read one of her mysteries know her name!
J.K. Rowling's agent was rejected by twelve publishers before Bloomsbury took a chance on her. How's that for winning the lottery!!!
And who knew that Beatrix Potter was turned down so many times that she decided to self-publish her work??? She's now a legend.
The list goes on and on. So when I'm tempted to listen to that other voice in my head that says "Give up. This is a pipe dream..." I will simply remind myself that perseverance is powerful.
